Nikos Kazantzakis

Nikos Kazantzakis
A Greek writer, poet, philosopher. He is called: the giant of modern
Greek literature. He is the most translated Greek author worldwide as
his works have been translated in more than 50 languages.
He was deeply influenced by philosophy of Henri Bergson, Freud,
Nietzsche, Christ, Buddhism.
Among his books is:
- Alexis Zorbas. This book was filmed on Crete, in the town of
Chania (1964) by Michalis Kakogiannis and Anthony Quinn played
the main role. Music by Mikis Theodorakis. - Christ Recrucified was also made a film: He, who must die by Jules
Dassin (1957). - Captain Michalis translated as Freedom of Death.
- The last temptation of Christ was made a film by Martin Scorsese
(1988).
He also wrote Odyssey which is divided into 24 rhapsodies and consists
of 33.333 lines.
While he was deeply spiritual, he struggled to find truth in religion, and
he focused on questioning Christian morals and values.
Part of the clergy condemned his work and was written on the index of
forbidden writers by the Catholic Church as an atheist.
He was however nominated for the Nobel Prize.
He is resting peacefully on the Martineng Bastiong of the Venetian Walls
and one can read his words on the tomb: I fear nothing, I hope nothing, I
am free.
In the village Myrtia (20 kilometers away from Heraklion) there is a
museum for him and it is worth visiting.
